Education - Hawkstone Historic Park and Follies in Shrewsbury
We offer a unique school visit site which lends itself to many curriculum activities covering a wide range of age groups. All key stages can be catered for, including Early Years Foundation Stage, and subjects to be covered could include Art & Design, Design & Technology, Geography, Science, English, Citizenship, PSHE and History. Other ideas could be tree identification, flora and fauna, orienteering, a scavenger hunt, nature crafts and story telling. Our team would be more than happy to tailor make a package to suit each individual group's interests - for example, if you are looking at geology/geography focus can be made on the caves and landscape, and for history there is much to be seen, for example, an Iron Age hill fort only one mile away where Roman coins have been found. The Grotto itself is thought to have originally been a Roman copper mine (there are the remains of many Roman roads in the area as Hawkstone was on the route from Viroconium (Wroxeter) to Mediolanum (Whitchurch) and Chester. The Red Castle within the Park (or "red cliff" castle) is of Medieval origin although it is sadly not open to the public. Rowland, the first Viscount Hill, was second in command to the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo and, as a final example of what can be discovered here, the legend of King Arthur and the Holy Grail is sure to fascinate children!
Groups of between 10 - 75 can be catered for and we can provide the services of a park warden on request. Teacher packs and work sheets can be provided and will be designed to meet each individual group's requirements. There is a classroom facility together with a tea room and a gift shop where souvenirs relating to the visit can be purchased at pocket money prices. Discussions can be had with the teacher / group leader prior to the visit so that we work within their particular requirements for their key stage and a free visit prior to the tip can be provided for the organizer.
